I was originally shopping around for a "sunrise" alarm clocks that are supposed to wake you gradually with light. I bought one of these timers instead and plugged my bedroom lamps into it. I was able to set the timer to come on a half hour before my alarm goes off, and I've been waking up a few minutes before the alarm goes off ever since. That's a big savings, considering those sunrise alarm clocks cost about $100. In addition, I've set the timer to turn those same lights on about 8pm and off again at 10pm.
Some reviews criticize the complexity of the programming functionality, but I was able to poke around for about 15 minutes and figure it out without reading the directions. If you can manage your way around a programmable thermostat, you can handle this timer. I especially love that you can set the timer's schedule separately for the week and the weekend (so I can sleep in on the weekend...in the dark!). One really great thing about this timer is that it comes with a battery back-up, which is terrific because I tend to lose power frequently.
